Websummit 2022: A handful of ideas on hybrid working

Hybrid work is a growing trend these days. After all, it allows the worker to have greater efficiency in managing his or her time. Now, this usually generates gains for the company, too. After all, a worker with a better work-life balance will have less risk of burnout. It sounds like one of those win-win situations.

However, this may not be quite true. After all, there are challenges that arise with hybrid work, as well as benefits that are lost with the absence of face-to-face work. Now, this is exactly what Edith Harbaugh and Hubert Palan talked about on day 3 of Websummit 2022. Both founded two fast-growing companies (unicorns), LaunchDarkly and Productboard, and shared their views on this topic.

Both agreed on the need to have an etiquette regarding remote work. In fact, they consider it difficult, in meetings with many people, to control who is present or not, so this is a challenge to the organizations that choose this modality. However, this does not apply to start-ups with a small number of people.

Harbaug and Palan also discussed the role of the CEO. First, they mentioned that implementing organizational culture would be one of their main (if not the main) functions.

Next, they touched a bit on communication. First, they agreed on the relevance of establishing a generic message for everyone, so that there is commonality. In addition, they shared the idea that the message had to be direct with regard to the information they wanted to convey, and also the notion that in a meeting it has to be clear who is the speaker and the decision maker.

A handful of loose ideas that offers much food for thought.
